Photography, Paper Piecing And Painting Cards

Camera Quilt Pattern | Whims And Fancies

Purchase Fields On Camera Pattern

I was wondering the other day why I like paper piecing so much and I think I might have an answer.  My camera and I are inseparable.  Photography makes me more aware of my surroundings.  The small flower and the grand scenery that it is a part of, the colours of reflected lights, the motions or the stillness of a moment – I love to see them all through my lens.  Photography, in turn, also helps me with my painting.  Even the paintings I create from imagination have their roots in the life around me.

Soon after I discovered paper piecing, fabric became another medium for me for painting pictures.  I start with drawing my designs from scratch before turning them into patterns.  The patterns are like puzzles to me.  I enjoy the challenge of trying to define shapes with minimum amount of seam alignment.  I realised that paper piecing is the playground for all three things that I love so much – photography, painting and puzzles.

I could therefore hardly say no when a custom order for making this camera quilt pattern came along.  However, I ended up waiting this long to make my own block.  I like to take photos in the moody, grey light of stormy days.  The grey leaf fabric couldn’t have reflected that any better.  The dark colour is also very well suited for the travel bag I will be making with this block.

Many thanks to those who have purchased this pattern and shared the projects they made for their photographer friends and family.  Fields On Camera is available in my shop.

Speaking of paintings, here’s my next set of index cards –

Stories have such power – pass them on!

icad 2015 - Solar Eclipse And Shuttle Endeavour Painting | Whims And Fancies

Solar eclipse viewed from our backyard

I was fortunate enough to see the flyby and transport of the Shuttle Endeavour to the museum.  I added a silhouette of her on the sun as a tribute to her glory days.

icad 2015 - Paper Cutting Tunnel Painting | Whims And Fancies

Paper Tunnel

I used a white pen to draw the lines after painting the background grey.

icad 2015 - Vineyard in autumn | Whims And Fancies

Vineyard in autumn

Painted from a photo I took last year

I tried some new techniques on these paintings.  After some trial and error, I think they turned out all right.

Happy Crafting,

I couldn’t pick a favorite painting. I hope they all become note cards available for purchase.

Ok I love it all but I have to say the Steampunk Wings are my favorite piece! Love it!

Oh, Soma! This is a really delightful post. Your camera design is very well done – nice use of line in it! Your paintings enchant me. I love each one. The fly by painting makes me smile – my father worked on the software systems for the space shuttles, so your painting brought back fun memories.

    One word -Beautiful!

A lovely camera block. I think Nightscapes is my favourite from this batch. Maybe because living in a small country town you can walk outside most nights and see how clear and bright the stars are.

“all right”???!!!! They are exquisite! How I wish I could draw or paint like that….The steampunk wings appeals to me, probably because I have my Wings quilt on the longarm, calling me…

Your paintings are beautiful. I particularly like Nightscapes with its dancing trees and Vineyard in autumn with its vibrant colors. :-)

Every time I see one of your paper pieced blocks I am amazed – you are so good at this! I also really liked your reflections on why you enjoy designing them so much and how they fit neatly in with your other interests. Your tunnel postcard reminds me of this, which I saw the other day.

Those steam punk wings look 3D…..I had to really look to see that it wasn’t. Absolutely beautiful! You are such an artist Soma, and I really admire your creativity.

  • Lara B. August 27, 2015 at 16:19

Soma you always amaze and delight me! I hope you realize that you could very well be an illustrator. Your imagination seems to have no limits! Tell them stories is pretty much how I raised my kiddos.
As you know, I love your PP patterns! This Camera will make a wonderful bag. I’ll have to show you my Brownie pattern when I get it sewn up.
I was wondering: On top of all your other talents, do you play violin?

  • Dixie August 27, 2015 at 15:12

The addition of camera block will make your travel bag so special.
I love the cards. Fabalous colours on the volins, nightscape, steampunk wings, and tell them stories. And, yes, paper tunnel does look like it’s embossed. Well done, indeed!
So glad you saw the shuttle fly by. I bet that was a wonderful experience.

  • Janine August 27, 2015 at 14:02

It must have been very exciting see the flyby and transport of the shuttle! Your camera block and cards are an inspiration as always :)

  • Mary August 27, 2015 at 12:41

This was a wonderful post of gorgeous work! With each one I would oooh and awww! Love your paper pieced camera and I can see your talent through the spectacular art pieces. I wish I had a tiny slice of your drawing talents. Seeing the space shuttle reminded me of taking my kids out to see Columbia (and many others too) land at Edwards AFB.

  • krislovesfabric August 27, 2015 at 12:03

That camera will be beautiful for a bag, love the fabric you chose for the lens. And great set of cards, you are certainly creating some wonderful art!

  • silvana August 27, 2015 at 11:37

Dear Soma!! Reading your explanation about the love of pp I think that it is the same to me! I adore challenges and pp is a puzzle, even for me that don’t design, only sew them! It is delicious to see it ready!
And one more time, I just looooooooove all your painting cards and of course, your pp designs, they are very very talented!

  • Kathleen August 27, 2015 at 11:28

All beautiful of course. Steampunk wings, awesome! But I am most intrigued by Paper Tunnel. Did you somehow emboss the white parts?

  • Susan August 27, 2015 at 09:38

Of course I like the violins :-) I also like the Nightscape. It looks like a wintry scene and the stars seem so much brighter on a clear winter night. It may be a reflection of the snow or the contrast between the snow layer on the ground and the sky. Of course I like to look at the stars anytime of the year.
