Make Art

Purchase Quill Pen Pattern

I love to play with many things, and it all starts with sketching a concept.  Even with all the electronic devices available at my fingertips, ink, pen and paper are still my favourite tools, and not just for painting.  When I am playing a musical instrument, I quite often scribble on my sheet music too.  I have a very difficult time passing up on pens and inks, resulting in a drawer full of ink bottles accompanied by wooden calligraphy pens, glass pens, fountain pens and quill pens.

One day, the sight of a quill pen and a bottle of ink on my table sparked the idea of a Make-Art-themed wall hanging.  This quill pen and ink bottle is the first in a series of Make Art quilt patterns, available in my shop.

That also got me thinking about the myriad ways of making art.  Many thanks to the makers of these blocks for letting me share some of them here.

Music is a very powerful and emotional form of art.  It has definitely played a big part in my life, which prompted me to make a whole set of musical instrument quilt patterns. carwashcat101 shared these photos of the beautiful pianos she made from my pattern.  She plans to make another one in green.

The musicians fill music notes with emotion as they bring the notes to life through their instruments.   Music Notes was one of the very first patterns I wrote.  featheredneststudio and craftyquilter made these wonderful blocks from it.

Where would I be without books!  So much power tucked away between pages artfully written by the authors.  Elizabeth Plantz, a member of the ALA biblioquilters,  made these two wall hangings for an auction using the FREADOM pattern. That auction raised $620 in scholarship funds from the sale of the minis.

Nature herself makes art all the time, always unique, a constant source of inspiration.  Elisabeth’s bear cub is definitely one of a kind, as is her Autumn Leaves table runner.

I can’t even begin to express my feelings about photography in words.  It is an intrinsic part of me now.  As cameras have become more ubiquitous, we use them to make art everyday while capturing life around us.  Scrapmaster01 and fabricker made these amazing cameras using my Fields On Camera pattern.

These examples of creativity got me excited about designing the Make Art quilt patterns.   I am very happy with this first one.  This quill pen quilt pattern makes a 6″ x 12″ block and is fairly easy to sew.  It is now available in my shop.  I think it would make a wonderful gift for an artist in your life.

All the other patterns are available in my shop.

Art is all around us, a force that magically moves us, and emotionally affects us.  This pattern is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to share more with you.

Travel Bag For Sweden

Camera Quiilt Pattern | Whims And Fancies

Purchase Fields On Camera Pattern

I was travelling in Sweden a few weeks ago.  Alongside all the travel preparation, I decided to make a bag only a few days before leaving.  I am a fairly light traveller and I always take a specific set of things in my hand bag in preparation for a long flight.   I wanted the bag to be just large enough to fit those items.  I knew I didn’t need a very complicated bag with lots of pockets.  I am not very advanced at sewing and I had to make this bag very quickly if I were to take it with me.  With all that in mind, I started looking for a simple bag pattern.

I was very excited to finish this block from my camera quilt pattern and I really wanted to use it for the bag.  I looked at a few bag patterns, but none of them were designed in a way that would enable me to use the camera block.  Most of the patterns were also too complicated for me to finish in the given time.  In the end, it was easier for me to write down the measurements and design my own bag rather than editing and retrofitting my needs onto an existing pattern.

Cross Body Bag With Zipper | Whims And Fancies

When I got around to the zipper, it was actually a lot easier to sew than I had expected.  I was going to use the outer blue fabric around the zipper, but not having any more of it, I ended up using the lining fabric instead.

When I attached the strap holders and rings to the bag, I stitched over them a few times for extra support.  I use cotton webbing for the loops as well as for the straps as they are much sturdier than cloth.  I used a set of silver strap hardware this time instead of my usual black.

Earlier, when I made the bag for Dixie, I liked this blue fabric so much, I bought a little extra.  Since this bag would see rough use, I needed a dark shade of fabric.  The blue fabric was just right for that.

The bag has a large back pocket and two inside pockets, which is just right for me.  The bag proved not only extremely useful during the many long flights from San Francisco to Kiruna, it was wonderful for day trips in Sweden as well.  It even holds two big water bottles along with all the other necessities.

Abisko, Sweden | Whims And Fancies

Abisko, Sweden

As for Sweden, it is a very beautiful country.  We hired a car there and travelled extensively every day.  Before we knew, it was time to head back home again, wishing for one more day there.  If Lara and Mary are reading this post, I promise I haven’t forgotten about writing a full post about our trip to Sweden.  I am still sorting through photos, I took an overwhelming number of them!
