Over the last few years, while travelling in Europe during autumn, I have come to love a few landscape features.  Living in a country where hay bales are mostly of plain square shape and stacked up high on top of each other, I am always on the lookout for the round ones when driving through the European countryside.

During our last road trip through Scotland, I took a few reference photos of hay bales for painting.

Aside from the round shape of the hay bales, I also love the shadows they cast, as well as the tracks and grooves in the fields.

After coming back home,  I started drawing one of the landscapes from Aberdeenshire featuring hay bales on the fields.  Once I was happy with the composition, I got to painting.

I chose oil to paint the landscape.

I love impressionist/post-impressionist style oil painting, Monet and Van Gogh being my favourites.  I painted the field in that style using  similar small, soft brush strokes, which I find very calming.

I had a marvelous time painting the warm, rich colours of hay bales against the woods and the deep blue sky with floating clouds from one of my favourite places in the world.

Hay Bales Of Aberdeenshire is now available in my shop as prints and cards.

A little note – My right hand is currently in a splint to heal a wrist fracture, so I am unable to type at my usual speed.  Please allow me a little extra time for replies.

Whilst I am at home, I am taking this opportunity to go on virtual journeys through my travel photos and paintings.  Hope you enjoyed them too.

Until next time,
-Soma

Way beyond my capabilities as an artist! Hay bales, however, are a part of my childhood.

Fab paintings. I’ve never known why we have rectangular and round bales, I guess it’s just a different way of storage #mysundayphoto

Awesome paintings! I love hay bales, too, and most of ours here in New Zealand are round.
I do hope your wrist heals soon.

You did a lovely job. Where I live, in the southeast of the US, we roll our hay. I have always had an affinity for them. Like rolling waves they calm my spirit.

The first time I saw the large round bales was in England. I was enchanted.
Here in Montana, there are more of the round ones than the square ones. Maybe they are for people/farms with larger herds?
Square ones for individuals, easier to handle? I do see them both here.

Your art is lovely as can be. I enjoy seeing the texture, colors and theme.

Lovely! Interestingly, now nearly all hay bales in much of America are of the round variety. Your painting will be featured in this week’s Creative Compulsions.

That’s beautiful, Soma. I love your phots too. We just did a long road trip and I took several photos of fields of the big round bales. No one seems to do the small rectangular ones anymore. Such sweet memories of growing up in the Midwest. Sorry about the fracture. Was that from your fall? I hope it heals quickly.

What a wonderful fall painting! Never thought about the difference in hay bales. *LOL* In my area we have the round (they are HUGE) and the square ones (much easier to handle). Thanks for also sharing the process! Need to try oil paints, too, as my last watercolor painting attempt went sooooooooo wrong. *LOL* Have a great day. :)

Oh dear, however did you fracture your wrist, Soma? Your photos remind of my little rural outpost where in summertime there are bales of hay, just like these, dotting the landscape. Your lovely painting brings to mind a Van Gogh masterpiece. I always love the texture of an oil painting. I hope your wrist heals quickly and you are able to paint (and type) again. Your Hay Bales of Aberdeen painting and your photos are gorgeous.

That’s interesting that you have square bales. I love to see the rectangular bales, which we always used to have. My cousins had a farm and we used to make houses with them in the barn. Nearly all are baling is round now and you need a machine to lift them :)
    Your picture looks great.
