April Showers

April Showers Spring Garden Quilt Pattern | Whims And Fancies

Purchase April Showers Pattern

Winter showers bring wild flowers where I live in California, but the old saying about April came to mind while I was drawing this picture, which turned into a quilt pattern soon afterwards.  I love spending time working in my little garden, tending to my flowering plants.  It’s often a struggle to keep them healthy during the harsh summers here, but when rain arrives in late autumn, it brings hope of a good spring.

April Showers On Grass | Whims And Fancies

If the rain continues into April, then I know my plants are going to have a wonderful summer.  After such an April shower few days ago, I had to go for a walk in our local park at the break of dawn.  Rain drops were still clinging to the blades of grass and to the petals of the wild flowers.

Walking in Rain with Red Umbrella Painting | Whims And Fancies

I love the solitude I find in rain.  I am not confident enough to be seen sporting a red umbrella or wearing a red coat, or even a red pair of boots.   I am a jeans-and-black-T-shirt kind of girl.  My boots are always mud-stained, and I carry a grey umbrella.  However, I can never pass up the idea of a red umbrella in my artwork.

This 12″ April Shower quilt pattern is quite versatile.  I used three shades of red to make mine.  The umbrella can also be made into a multicolour one, or made with a person’s favourite colour.  I used green grass, but I can easily imagine a flowering patch in that area instead.

The April Showers quilt pattern can be found in my shop.

My rain-loving gardener self is very happy with this block.  It also makes me think of all the walks I went on with my husband while travelling, since those almost always require us to carry umbrellas.   Instead of turning this into a wall hanging, I am thinking of making a bag with it.  That would be me carrying a red umbrella for the first time my life.

What a coincidence. For An Endeavourers challenge of raindrops keep falling on my head, I did an upside down red umbrella just like yours. Great minds think alike!

I love a colourful umbrella. You should definitely get one! My children bought me a new umbrella for Mothering Sunday on 24th March. It has cats on it and I’ve been wanting to use it but it hasn’t rained since!

The way describe yourself, it’s in art that you really show your identity, eh? I would love to see Soma with patterned rain boots, Red slicker (jacket) and a beautiful red or bright blue umbrella, like in your art work:):)
Your interesting and true-to-life post is very much appreciated by All Seasons:) Have a great artsy week, Soma:) Junieper/Jesh

Another fabulous pattern, and terrific idea for a bag, Soma! I’m not a walk-in-the-rain kind of girl; I’m a stay in and read or sew in the rain girl! I do love the smell of rain though!

What a fabulous quilt, you’ve really captured the month of April today where I always associate it with rain. Brings back memories of my childhood catching rain drops on my tongue and splashing in puddles. I hope one day you can reward yourself with that red umbrella.
    Happy PPF Tracey x

Another lover of the red umbrella. Over here the grass would be replaced by orange dust and gravel as the drought lingers on. There’s still a few persistent flowering native grasses or weeds though.

I love your red umbrella block, Soma, but I think you need a REAL red umbrella, and red polka dot rain boots to go with them. And when you go out in the rain with your red umbrella and boots, you should splash in the puddles. Life is too short to waste a rainy day on black umbrellas and blue jeans.

Your quilt pattern is adorable! I live in Seattle now, and it seems April showers are most definitely a thing here. We’re getting nothing but rain for the next week! (Better get some flowers at the end of it) ;) Happy PPF!

I love rain! I am a splash-in-the-puddles-with-my-bright-pink-flower-gumboots, kinda girl. I also have a beautiful umbrella with Monet’s water lilies splashed all over it. =) I love your new pattern, Soma. It is so very clever. I look forward to seeing this lovely block fashioned into a bag. Me think a pair of fancy boots would be the perfect accessory to your fun bag.

That is such a cute pattern. I love the little puddle. I think a bag would be perfectly adorable. I think our puddles are done for the year here, but everything is growing beautifully here.

I like your umbrella block. I like walking in a “warm rain” but not so much a cold rain. I do have a red umbrella. I have a red and black winter coat. No red boots though.

    A lovely pattern, Soma.
A walk in the rain definitely heightens the senses. The world seems so alive in the rain.
Your going to look wonderful carrying your red umbrella bag! (Love thoses irises!)
My umbrella is basic black, but I’d love to own and sport a Monet or Van Gogh print umbrella.
Perhaps we should both take a colourful plunge? :)

I love your umbrella! I might not sport a red umbrella either, but it sure makes for a high impact visual block! If we could get a bit of rain every few days for the lawn and plants…that would be ideal!

Soma – I used to complain about rain, but after living in the UK for so many years, I learned to adapt. And now, in Montana, a very dry environment with a potentially dangerous fire season, we are thankful for every drop of precipitation. The red umbrella is a perfect symbol for all that rain delivers to us.
