I am making a quilt for my kitties using one of my old patterns, Pinwheel Flower.  I often get asked about how I choose colours for the blocks I make from my paper piecing patterns.  For me they are illustrations done in fabric, so most of the time it is very akin to how I paint.  I will try to show my selection process.

I use colours and prints together to create a certain style, mood, or even a season. 

I took this photo of a little purple larkspur flower during a hike.  I was looking for tiny little wild flowers for photography and my husband found this one for me.  As this photo was my intial inspiration, I chose green for the quilt background.

Summer is definitely here, but it feels like Spring in our garden.   Despite the heatwaves we have been having, all the plants in our garden are bursting with flowers.  The pink and purple flowers reminded me of the field of wildflowers we saw during our trips to the UK.  Inspired by a couple of photos that I had taken during our travels in England, I finished an acrylic painting and a quilted mini wall hanging.

During March and April, California is usually ablaze with wild flowers.  Even the desert comes alive to put on a spectacular show.  I can’t count the number of times we drove out mile after mile to go see the wild flowers in the desert.

I sketched this flower through the window such a long time ago.   With wild flowers in my mind, I couldn’t help but finally finish the flower quilt pattern so I could stitch the block.  To me, it almost feels like a painting.
